Black Tuesday

The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the Great Crash, the Stock Market Crash of 1929, was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its fallout.

The initial crash occurred on Thursday, October 24, 1929, but the catastrophic downturn of Monday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 29 precipitated widespread alarm and the onset of an unprecedented and long-lasting economic depression for the United States and the world. This stock market collapse continued for a month. Leading to the phrases: Black Thursday, Black Friday, then Black Monday, and Black Tuesday.

Depression

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but in most countries it started in about 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s or early 1940s.[1] It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century, and is used in the 21st century as an example of how far the world's economy can decline.

It seems we have learned nothing.

Migrant Mother

Katherine (to the left of the frame) said in a December 2008 interview that the photo's fame made the family feel shame at their poverty.

Once again, Wikipedia paves the way.

160 years without Poe

450px-Edgar_allan_poes_grave.jpg

On October 7, 1849,

American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe died under mysterious
circumstances at Washington Medical College after being found four days
earlier on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, in a delirious and
incoherent state.

The author even has an official toaster, who visits his grave yearly:

The Poe Toaster is the unofficial nickname given to a mysterious figure who pays an annual tribute to American author Edgar Allan Poe by visiting the author's original grave marker on his birthday, January 19. Though many gather annually to watch for the toaster and his yearly visit is supported by the Edgar Allan Poe Society, he is rarely seen or photographed. His identity has never been revealed to the public.

Galileo 400

File:Galileo.arp.300pix.jpg

400 years ago today Galileo Galilei publicly demonstrated his telescope for the first time. Influencing numerous scientists and literally bringing new light to our understading of the universe. Quoting Stephen Hawking:

"Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science."

Kudos to us all, thanks to him.

Voyager 2 - Conqueror of the Solar System

File:Neptune.jpg

20 years ago today Voyager 2 reached Neptune, marking (considering 2006's IAU decision to call Pluto a dwarf planet) the point when every planet in the solar system had been visited at least once by human spacecraft.
